A major fire caused a stir in Ahlen on July 1, 2025. The emergency call came in at 12:25 p.m. and the fire department found a 20x30 meter barn fully ablaze. The black column of smoke could be seen from several kilometers away. In order to fight the flames, the emergency services first had to work from a safe distance as the heat was enormous. Several explosions rocked the scene, triggered by 1,000 liters of diesel, propane gas bottles and lithium batteries in the barn.
Fortunately, the fire department, supported by additional fire engines, was able to prevent the flames from spreading to an adjacent fence and a wheat field. The fire was quickly contained with a large contingent of emergency services, including the Ahlen fire department, the Vorhelm fire brigade as well as volunteers and full-time helpers from Beckum and Warendorf-Hoetmar. A firefighter suffered a circulatory collapse during the operation and received immediate medical attention.
Search operation and property damage
In the middle of the extinguishing work, a lifeless person was found, presumably a 56-year-old man from Hamm. The identity of the deceased is currently being determined through an autopsy; so far there are no signs of crime. While investigations into the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances of death are ongoing, the property damage is estimated at around 300,000 euros. A construction company has been called in to dismantle the burnt-out extension and the LKA fire experts are also involved to determine the cause of the devastating fire.
A similar accident recently occurred in Heiersdorf, where a barn burst into flames. The fire broke out shortly after midnight and surprised the Böttger family, who were able to remain unharmed. This barn, which is located in the four-sided courtyard of the Burgstadt district, was home to a popular guesthouse until the end of last year. Here, too, the cause of the fire is still unclear, but wood and straw are assumed to be possible sources of ignition, such as Free press reported.
