Hamm is planning Christmas magic without Christmas trees: This is how it will be festive!
A remarkable change in Christmas decorations can be expected in the city center of Hamm. In 2025 there will no longer be traditional Christmas trees and the city administration has decided to explore alternative ways to make the Advent season festive. This decision results in savings of around 15,000 euros and shows that a certain budget must also be adhered to for Christmas celebrations. Klaus Ernst, the head of city marketing, comments on this development: Some citizens are of the opinion that Christmas trees belong better in the forest and less in the city center, where they are susceptible to vandalism.
In response to this request, the city is planning larger fir trees in prominent places, such as in the pedestrian zone, in order to still create an atmospheric atmosphere. An example of this are the existing light trees on Weststrasse, which contribute to the Advent atmosphere. In addition, a tree had to be felled at the Persil clock; a replacement is scheduled for next spring.
New lighting displays
Another exciting aspect of the new planning is the initiative of the interest group (IG) Weststrasse “mittendrin”, which was launched to string fairy lights over Weststrasse all year round. These chains should be illuminated differently depending on the occasion and installed with up to nine chains in a linear design. However, the consent of some residents is still missing before installation can begin this fall. The fairy lights will be financed via the City Fund, which is a good step in the right direction.
This new approach to Christmas lighting is also intended to help both strengthen the local economy and promote the special atmosphere in the city. The importance of professional Christmas lighting is increasingly being recognized in order to attract more visitors to shopping streets and squares. This goes hand in hand with the goal of creating an inviting shopping experience, which is supported by creative lighting solutions. This approach can also be seen in other cities, where companies such as Die Schmücker have implemented significant lighting projects in Hamburg or Buxtehude in order to promote city revitalization and develop a positive city image.
Separate Christmas time
The Christmas season has many traditions, some of which last until “Candlemas” on February 2nd. Custom dictates that Christmas lights and decorations remain in place until then. In Germany there is also a 10 p.m. quiet time, which must also be observed for Christmas lights in order to avoid annoying the neighbors. Decorations traditionally take place on January 6th, Epiphany, while Christmas lights should not be left unattended to avoid possible disruption.
A lot will change in Hamm in the coming Christmas season, but the city has set itself the goal of creating a special flair despite moving away from Christmas trees. This change not only shows creativity, but also a good knack for dealing with the challenges that the Advent season brings with it.
