Teutoburgia: Discover the historical jewel in the heart of the Ruhr area!
The Teutoburgia settlement – a hidden gem in the Ruhr area
The Teutoburgia settlement, nestled in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, is more than just a place to live. It is considered one of the most beautiful mining settlements in the region and is very popular as a popular excursion destination. The historic settlement was built between 1909 and 1923 and has shaped the landscape of the area ever since. How Ruhr24 reported, it includes an impressive 136 historic buildings in which citizens now live. This settlement, designed by the architect Otto Berndt, was based on the garden city concept of the social reform thinker Ebenezer Howard.
Behind the high facades are around 530 modern residential units, which form a harmonious unit between historical elements and contemporary comfort. You can find semi-detached and terraced houses here with their own gardens and open front gardens, which create a green atmosphere and invite the neighborhood to linger.
A look into history
The history of the Teutoburgia colliery dates back to 1911, when it began producing coal and had a significant impact on the region until it was closed in 1925. The mining settlement was also built during this time and was designed as a place for the miners to live. What is particularly notable is that the settlement suffered minimal damage during World War II and damaged buildings were later replaced. In 1991, Teutoburgia was placed under monument protection, which ensures the preservation and appreciation of the architecture.
Another important step in its development was the comprehensive renovation carried out by VEBA AG between 1988 and 1998. These efforts were supported with an extensive investment program of 65 million German marks, which resulted in the settlement not only retaining its charm but also being modernized. The Architecture NRW emphasizes that the settlement today represents an example of the successful integration of historical heritage and modern living comfort.
Art and nature in Teutoburgia
A special highlight of the settlement is the Teutoburgia artificial forest, a spacious 5.5 hectare park that was created on the former mine site. Here visitors will find a preserved headframe that is reminiscent of the glory days of mining and is now integrated into the green complex as a symbolic element. A walk through this park not only offers relaxation, but also a fascinating insight into the history of the region.
For drivers, the settlement can be easily reached via the A42, Herne-Börnig exit. Cyclists can use the Emscher cycle path or the train to get to this historic place. Teutoburgia is not only a place to live, but also a valued destination for excursions and cultural explorations, such as Industrial Heritage Route explained.
