Höxter district: Training opportunities are increasing – who benefits from it?
The training market in the Höxter district is particularly robust this year and is the only district in East Westphalia-Lippe that can benefit from an increasing number of training places. In the 2024/25 reporting year, the district recorded an increase of almost seven percent in training positions, which is a significant signal for the region. Radio Hochstift reports that this positive trend is partly influenced by demographic change, as many older employees are retiring and companies are increasingly relying on young trainees.
The demand for training places also seems to be gaining momentum. In the current round, according to the head of the Paderborn Employment Agency, Heinz Thiele, the number of applicants has increased by six percent. However, 31 training positions are currently unfilled, while 84 young people are actively looking for training. This means that companies and young people definitely have the opportunity to get a good deal.
A look at the numbers
The training figures in the Höxter district not only show an increase in the number of available places, but also a growing interest among young people. In April 2025, 1,113 training positions were already reported, which corresponds to an increase of 88 positions or 8.6 percent compared to the previous year. Interestingly, there were 933 applicants in the same month; That is 83 more than in the previous year, which corresponds to an increase of 9.8 percent. The employment agency highlights that despite the general economic weakness, the availability of training places is stable. Nevertheless, employers often struggle to find suitable candidates.
If you take a closer look, you can see that several professions, particularly in the commercial sector and in the skilled trades, are particularly in demand. Most of the unfilled positions were in the professions of retail clerk (47 jobs), sales clerk (33 jobs) and industrial clerk (30 jobs). This suggests that it is more important than ever for young people to have the right skills.
Support for young people
The career advisors at the Youth Careers Agency offer comprehensive support so that young people can find their place on the training market. They are active at schools in the district and facilitate individual career orientation discussions, which can often be arranged online. BIBB analyzes also show that the demand for dual training is increasing, while at the same time the supply of training places is decreasing nationwide.
In 2024, the number of newly concluded training contracts in Germany fell, while demand increased. This shows that the market is constantly changing. Even if the search for training places is becoming more difficult in other regions, things are currently looking positive for the Höxter district, both for the companies and for the applicants.
It remains to be hoped that the trend can continue, at least in the Höxter district, and enable young people in the region to have a successful professional future. Anyone who has the right hand during this time can definitely benefit from the current situation.
