New ballet director in Krefeld: Big gift for Sogni d’oro!
June 16, 2025 brings exciting news for the dance scene in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach: Manuel Gross will take over the management of the ballet department at the Theater Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. Gross, who graduated from the renowned John Cranko Ballet Academy in Stuttgart in 2002, brings with him a wealth of experience from various ballet companies, which took him via Chemnitz, Görlitz and Magdeburg to the ThüringenBallet in Gera. He has been active as ballet manager at the theater since 2016/17 and will now act as ballet director from the coming season 25/26. This promotion could be a breath of fresh air for ballet fans, as Gross has completed numerous international projects and choreographies, including the first modern ballet recital for the Mongolian National Ballet in Ulan Bator.
The theater's ballet friends have been very committed right from the start and support the new production KRMG.tanz 3 “Sogni d’oro” by Alessandro Borghesani. This cooperation is not only characterized by creative ideas, but also by valuable material support: eight custom-made lamps and a mobile dance carpet were donated. The latter, supported by the Stadtsparkasse Mönchengladbach, underlines the high status of ballet in the region and was valued at a total value of over 12,000 euros. This shows that there is a good knack for promoting art and culture.
A long history of ballet
The development of ballet is an exciting chapter in dance history. In the 19th century, women like Marie Taglioni, who is considered the first important ballerina to dance on pointe, dominated. Her performance in the “Nuns’ Ballet” ushered in a new era of romantic ballet. Taglioni, known for her distinctive clothing and lyrical expression, made dancing “en pointe” the central element on stage. This technical development, pioneered by ballet masters such as Carlo Blasis, cemented the ballerina's status as a central figure in ballet and gave audiences the illusion of an ethereal being brought to life through depictions of fairy tales and fantastic stories in the roles they performed.
The Krefeld Theater, under the new management of Manuel Gross, could soon fall back on this tradition and advance the development of ballet. The region has a lot to offer when it comes to promoting ballet and dance and inspiring audiences with new, creative projects. It will be exciting to see how the ballet friends and Gross work together to further develop the art form in the region.
Whether in the classic ballet style or with modern interpretations – the Theater Krefeld and Mönchengladbach has the best conditions to captivate artists and audiences. The anticipation for the coming season is growing and the positive response of support for “Sogni d’oro” gives hope for an exciting ballet year.
