US tariffs on EU imports: Danger for Germany's textile industry!

The economy is facing new challenges: From August 11, 2025, all imports from the EU to the USA will be subject to additional tariffs. This is already causing unrest in the industry, as Fashion Network reports. These tariffs, which are clearly protectionist in nature, represent a significant step backwards for transatlantic trade and have the potential to severely disrupt long-standing trade relationships.

Uwe Mazura, the general manager of the Textil+Mode Association, sounds the alarm and warns of the serious consequences for the industry. He points out that medium-sized companies, which play a central role in the German economy, could suffer from the consequences of these tariffs. In his statement, Mazura underlines the need for low tariffs and predictable conditions for companies to maintain competitiveness.

The impact on trade

With the new tariffs coming into force, it becomes clear: trade with the USA is becoming expensive and uncertainty is growing. The textile and fashion industry has already had negative experiences with trade conflicts in the past, which plunged many companies into fear of their existence. These tariff increases clearly show why a stable and rules-based multilateral trading order, for example through the WTO, is important. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy therefore calls for international trade policy to be based on common rules again.

In order to stabilize trade relationships, a proactive approach is required. The EU Commission is called upon to seek dialogue with the USA in order to eliminate trade barriers and improve relations. Particular attention is paid to the need to implement free trade agreements more quickly. Agreements such as the EU-Mercosur Agreement are still not in force, and negotiations with other countries often drag on excessively.

The importance of tariffs

Tariffs have historically been an important trade policy tool to secure strategic industries. However, a number of countries, including Germany, have pushed ahead with the reduction of tariffs in order to promote economic efficiency and create fair competition conditions. The WTO's most favored nation principle ensures that tariffs apply equally to all member states. There are no customs duties for intra-community trade within the EU, which strengthens the internal market.

Concerns about the announced tariff increases are not unfounded: they could endanger existing supply chains and place a significant strain on economic stability. The EU has already reacted and is coordinating closely with Germany and other member states in order to decisively face possible challenges.

In view of these developments, the fragmentation of the EU internal market is perceived as an obstacle to achieving a unified bargaining chip. Mazura therefore calls for an end to national special routes and a standardization of trade law in order to strengthen Europe's negotiating position. A clear appeal that politicians should take to heart in order to secure the future of trade.
