HSG Varel misses an away win – dramatic draw in the last second!

In an exciting game on September 28, 2025, HSG Varel fought for a draw against the HandbALL Lippe II team. The encounter in the Horatec Arena ended with 32:32, after Varel was even in the lead with 32:30 in the final phase. The match attracted 450 spectators who experienced a thrilling game.

HSG Varel, which had a positive away record of 4-0 points in the last two games, started the match strongly but was behind 17-15 at halftime. In the second half the team fought back, and after an equalizer by Jan Derk Janßen to make it 17:17, Varel temporarily secured a two-goal lead (24:22) and was able to keep up well until the final minute. But the last seconds were dramatic: the hosts equalized in the very last second with goals from Lars Bakker and striker Benjamin Bröhl.

Coach comments and game progress

After the game, HSG coach Arek Blacha expressed his disappointment about the lost point, but at the same time praised his team's commitment and willingness to perform. “We had the game in hand and losing a point just feels unfair after the way the game went,” said Blacha. His team showed a strong second half, but the decisive equalizer in the final seconds cast a shadow over their performance.

Varel's best shooter, Mohamad “Mo” Sibahi, shone with a total of eight goals, followed by his teammate Joel Hoppe, who scored seven goals. On the other hand, Benjamin Bröhl was the best player and scored a total of ten goals for Lippe II, which kept his team in the game.

Things continue for HSG Varel on Saturday, October 4th. Then the next home game against TV Emsdetten is coming up. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. in the Manfred Schmidt sports hall. With the experience gained from this game, the team around coach Blacha should aim to not give away any points and to make their first profit in the new month.
