Lippe renatured: New habitat for fish and canoeists in Salzkotten!

The Lippe has taken a big step towards ecological health on its section near Salzkotten-Mantinghausen. With the successful completion of the renaturation measures, a new chapter has opened for this section of the river. Bezreg Detmold reports that the project includes the installation of a new type of base slide, which is equipped with ten stone bars. This sole glide replaces a 90 cm high heel that was an insurmountable obstacle for many fish species.

What makes this measure so special? The ecological continuity of the water has been restored so that fish and other aquatic organisms can now cross the river without any problems. This will be made possible in particular by gradually lowering the height difference of the riverbed, which will benefit fish stocks. An oxbow river of the Lippe could also be reconnected to the river system, which offers the fish a protected retreat, especially during floods.

Green oases and habitats

The newly created oxbow has already transformed into a small biotope. A steep bank has emerged here, which has now been adopted as a habitat by the kingfisher. The bank reinforcement is secured by poplar trunks, and the poplars are secured with willow seedlings that will develop into new trees. The project not only promotes local ecological diversity, but also provides habitat for small fish and macrozoobenthos.

In addition, observations were made that a beaver was spotted in the area of the renaturation measure - another sign of the revitalization of the area. The Lippe is now navigable for canoeists again, and boaters can easily portage the sole on the left bank. The oxbow island on the right remains protected under nature conservation law and may not be entered in order to ensure untouched development.

Background of the measures

The Detmold district government has been planning the measures for ecological continuity of the Lippe since autumn 2024. [Wilde Lippe](https://www.wilde-lippe.de/lippe-renaturierung/massnahme Description-1) explains that the goal is to enable aquatic organisms to migrate unhindered. The work was carried out exclusively on public property and included not only the demolition of an old cultural dam, but also the installation of dead wood elements in the Lippe and the development of a floodplain structure with a biotope character.

“Nature conservation and water management have gone hand in hand here,” emphasizes [Umweltbundesamt](https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/naturschutz-gewaesserentwicklung-ein-schoenes- Paar), because both areas fulfill important social tasks. Through joint planning, resources can be used more effectively and public acceptance can be increased. This not only promotes biodiversity, but also helps to maintain the natural functionality of rivers and floodplains.

This environmentally friendly initiative for the Lippe will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the surrounding area and biodiversity. The future looks bright for this section of the river – a real paradise for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts!
