The opening of the FISU World University Games was celebrated on Wednesday evening in the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena in Duisburg. Around 8,500 participants from over 150 countries are taking part, and the event offers a special platform for student athletes. North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst gave the opening speech and thus initiated the celebrations, which were accompanied by music by the badminton player and violinist Miranda Wilson. The FISU Games are the largest multi-sport event for students and rank right after the Olympics among the most important sporting events.
The mixed team competition in badminton is already in the starting blocks and begins on Thursday. The German team comes under pressure from first-class Taiwan in Group H. As in an exciting duel that will definitely captivate the audience in Mülheim an der Ruhr, it gets down to business on Friday, July 19th at 12:30 p.m. The group standings will determine which team secures the best starting position for the round of 16, which will be drawn at 4 p.m. Things will finally get serious with the first round of 16 games on Friday evening from 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m.

Badminton has become an integral part of the FISU World University Games in recent years and became a compulsory sport in 2021 by an official decision from FISU. Badminton has been represented at university championships since 2007 and attracts a lot of interest, especially among student athletes. The World University Badminton Championships take place every two years and offer a platform that is very popular.
The FISU Games are appearing in Germany for the first time in 36 years, ensuring an exciting event that promises both sporting and cultural highlights.
