Lordano crowns the Cologne gallop season with a triumphant victory!

The 2025 Cologne gallop season ended with an exciting finale at the Weidenpescher family racecourse, which took place on November 2nd. In dry weather, numerous participants competed in thrilling competitions and created an enthusiastic atmosphere among the spectators. The focus was on the main event for the Silver Horse, Group 3, in which the six-year-old gelding Lordano won under the leadership of jockey René Piechulek. The triumph of Lordano, who comes from Manfred Ostermann's renowned Ittlingen Stud, marked his sixth victory in a group race and caused cheering enthusiasm in the audience. In keeping with the occasion, his coach Marcel Weiß also celebrated his 49th birthday that day.

Second place went to the English guest mare Coco Royale, ridden by Darragh Keenan, followed by Partnun ridden by Michal Abik in third place. Local horses also showed strong performances. Wild River under coach Peter Schiergen and Against All Odds under Andreas Suborics also celebrated home victories. A special highlight was the first race in which the mare Aida triumphed under Anna van den Troost.

International highlights

Another exciting race took place as part of the betting system, which had an international flair. Emelie Gustavsson won the international amateur race on Artistic Mission, trained by Christian von der Recke. Miss Eagle also won under the rider Vanesa Cernak for trainer Axel Kleinkorres. While the last big race of the year took place successfully in Cologne, there is already another look at the upcoming sporting highlight: The Cologne gelding Flatten the Curve will start in the Melbourne Cup on November 5th, 2025. He could become the second German horse since 2014 to win the prestigious competition, which offers prize money of 5.64 million euros.

The fascination with horse racing is old and has a long history. According to the Wikimedia article on horse racing, horse racing is one of the oldest organized sports, having existed since the times of ancient Greece and Rome. Horses have been bred for centuries to compete as racehorses, particularly English thoroughbreds and trotters, which are now considered top breeds. International racing is booming and has become a major industry, with an estimated value of $402.3 billion in 2022.
