USA triumphs at the World University Games: Rain of medals in NRW!
The 2025 World University Games started the fifth day on Monday, July 21, 2025. The enthusiasm in the stands and in the competition venues in the Rhine-Ruhr region cannot be overlooked. Over 8,500 athletes from more than 150 nations are at the start in Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Hagen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Berlin. So far, the games have shown an impressive range of sporting achievements and thrilled spectators with excitement and team spirit.
Day 5 featured several exciting competitions, including the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle finals. Of note, the American team set a new world university record in the mixed 4x100m freestyle. With a time of 3:24.27 minutes, the team made a real statement. Matt King from the USA shined in the men's 100m freestyle and secured the gold medal with a time of 48.01 seconds. His compatriot Pieter Coetze of South Africa followed him in second place, followed by Aleksandr Shchegolev of Azerbaijan, who won the bronze medal. The results of the day are impressive. In swimming, Leah Shackley took home the gold medal in the women's 100m butterfly with a time of 58.16 seconds.
