Water rescue in Mülheim: Dramatic swimming accident on the Ruhr!

Early on Monday evening, June 30, 2025, the Mülheim an der Ruhr fire department was called to a dramatic water rescue operation in the city center. The alarm went off when a person failed to return to the surface after jumping from the castle bridge into the Ruhr. Two people had taken the jump while one of them went under. Fortunately, several passers-by on a pedal boat happened to be nearby and began searching for the missing person before the rescue workers arrived.

The fire department provided first aid quickly and professionally. The emergency services immediately dived into the water and were finally able to rescue the person and bring him to the bank. The rescue service was waiting there with an emergency doctor who immediately began medical treatment. Despite immediate measures and ongoing resuscitation, the rescued person was transported to a hospital. The emergency pastoral care and the police were also called to the scene to look after eyewitnesses and other affected people. In addition to the fire department, the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) was also involved in the operation.

The emergency call station is powered by environmentally friendly solar energy and does not require an underground cable. In the event of an emergency call, it sends a light signal that indicates the location of the emergency. This measure is intended to make a significant contribution to safety on the Ruhr and is a valuable step towards protecting swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.

The DLRG and its central role

The DLRG plays an essential role in the water rescue service in Germany. They monitor bathing beaches and carry out appropriate relief measures in emergencies. They not only take care of swimming accidents, but also respond to boating and ice accidents. Your water rescue service takes place on standing and flowing water and is offered all year round, even in winter conditions. The main task of water rescuers is to protect people and animals from drowning, with first aid measures always being carried out in close proximity to the water.

The organization and coordination of emergency services is an important part of the DLRG's tasks. This happens not only on a voluntary basis, but also on behalf of the public sector. The DLRG organizes everything independently and thus ensures safety that is valued by bathers and water sports enthusiasts.

While the incident on the Ruhr turned out to be a tragic swimming accident, the quick response from the fire department and DLRG shows how important it is to have such safety measures and initiatives in our cities. In an emergency, valuable time is saved and lives are saved through trained rescuers and facilities such as the emergency call box.
