There's something happening on Germany's highways! From next year, a new, innovative control system will ensure more safety on the roads. A few sophisticated piezoelectric weighing beams, which are integrated directly into the road, set the standards for monitoring trucks and their weight. How Chip.de reported, every vehicle is weighed as it drives past and if the permissible weight is exceeded, the license plate number is immediately displayed on an LED display. The concrete testing of this technology starts in North Rhine-Westphalia on the A4 Aachen-Cologne. The plan is to put the first pilot project into operation in 2026. Around 500 vehicles are to be checked here every day. If a truck is overloaded, the fines can quickly climb to up to 452 euros - a pretty big chunk that the drivers will definitely not like. Anyone who exceeds the permissible load by more than five percent even has to unload the vehicle before they can continue driving. This not only protects the weight, but also safety on the roads!
Additional measures and expansion plans
In order to give truck drivers the opportunity to correct their loads, additional parking areas will be set up at the rest areas. The expansion of the system is ambitious: 16 such automated weight checks are to be installed throughout Germany by 2028.
