NRW support: Summer holiday regulations before historic upheaval!
There are rumblings in North Rhine-Westphalia: The SPD opposition has taken up the state government's demand for new regulations for the summer holidays. SPD parliamentary group leader Jochen Ott sees an urgent need for action and emphasizes that negotiations about the holiday dates are essential. This is no coincidence, because in North Rhine-Westphalia, students in schools that are not air-conditioned in particular suffer, which often leads to “heat-free”.
The debate about the summer vacation regulations has its origins in the inequality between the federal states. Schoolchildren in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are traditionally the last to start their summer holidays, namely at the beginning of August. This arrangement is not only a challenge for the families affected, but also creates a patchwork of holiday dates that makes it difficult to plan a consistent holiday. Ott therefore calls for a rotation of holidays for all federal states in order to create more equality. He is supported by the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Hendrik Wust and school minister Dorothee Feller.
The current holiday regulations in focus
As the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) the federal states are aiming for coordinated summer holiday planning. This function is intended to ensure an even distribution of holidaymakers and thus minimize traffic problems. There is a rolling system that is divided into five groups, with NRW falling into Group III.
| Country group | Federal states |
|---|---|
| I | Brandenburg, Berlin, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein |
| II | Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia |
| III | North Rhine-Westphalia |
| IV | Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland |
| v | Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria |
The summer holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg traditionally begin last and are viewed as historically documented. As a result, fair distribution is almost impossible for all other federal states. A reform will not be conceivable until the 2030/31 school year at the earliest RND supplemented.
Reactions and arguments
The demands from NRW find support in other federal states such as Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Hamburg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder On the other hand, it positions itself vehemently against a change in the holiday rhythm and insists on the Bavarian tradition, which is firmly anchored in the “DNA of Bavaria”. This resistance creates ongoing tensions in the discussion about the summer holidays.
In addition to the political dimensions, the holiday regulation also has practical effects on families, who are often faced with the challenge of planning their holiday flexibly. Different holiday times can also make planning school projects and exams difficult. Minister of Education Karin Prien therefore appeals to the countries to agree on a uniform solution.
The future discussion about school holidays will not only concern education politicians, but will also focus on the tourism industry, which could benefit from a staggered system.
