The final of the men's district football cup between FV Wiehl and SV Schönenbach took place in Frielingsdorf in tropical temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius. A true spectacle for around 400 spectators, which was not stingy with 29 goals in the day's games and provided plenty of entertainment. FV Wiehl ultimately prevailed 7:5 in extra time after the game ended 4:4 in regular time. An exciting match that no one will soon forget, as Oberberg Aktuell reports.
The regional league team FV Wiehl had a bumpy start, as Schönenbach scored the first goal in the 6th minute through Justus Dabringhausen. But the Wiehlers were not discouraged and equalized through Berkan Durdu in the 16th minute. At the latest after Florian Liebelt made it 3-1 in the 52nd minute, the Wiehlers seemed to be on the road to victory. But Schönenbach didn't give up and fought his way back into the game, scoring two goals in stoppage time and forcing extra time. Here the people of Wiehl had more staying power. Florian Liebelt and Jan Peters gave the score a 6:4 lead before Julio Molongua reduced the score to 6:5 in the 111th minute. However, the last word was given to Gino Lanfranco, who scored the decisive goal in the 119th minute to make it 7:5 and suffered a serious ligament injury, as the Rundschau also reported.
An exciting tournament day
The final was part of an exciting day of tournaments which also included the women's final. Here the players from TuS Homburg-Bröltal prevailed against SV Eintracht Hohkeppel after a thrilling penalty shootout. Both teams, FV Wiehl and TuS Homburg-Bröltal, qualified for the FVM Cup with their victories and were each able to enjoy 1,000 euros in prize money. The losing teams, Schönenbach and Eintracht Hohkeppel, received 500 euros, while the two third-place teams, TV Hopesthal and Jan Wellem Bergisch Gladbach, received 300 and 200 euros.
The coaches who watched the action from the sidelines were also involved. Sascha Mühlmann, coach of FV Wiehl, spoke of a “performance of will” from his team and was relieved that the cup victory could be celebrated after an exciting season. On the other hand, Schönenbach's sporting director Matthias Siebertz analyzed a weak performance in extra time and attributed it to individual mistakes. In addition, Schönenbach's regular goalkeeper, Frederic Löhe, was unavailable at short notice, which didn't make things any easier.
