Sound community: cheers at the church concert in Wiehl!
Last Saturday, July 2, 2025, the Evangelical Church in Wiehl filled the hearts of the listeners with an extraordinary concert. The Oberwiehler singer quartet, under the direction of Ralf Zimmermann, presented a special kind of musical experience together with “The Voices” from Bergneustadt and the Remperg trombone choir. The entry fee, which was priced at twelve euros, attracted numerous visitors; the church was almost full and the atmosphere was filled with anticipation for a diverse repertoire.
The title of the concert was “My Heart Wants to Celebrate You” and the performance reflected a fine mix. The evening program mixed German, Italian and Latin sounds, with particular attention to African influences, which “The Voices” and the Remperg trombone choir implemented in their pieces. Choir speaker Dirk Rothe emphasized in advance the church's excellent acoustics and the choir's intensive preparation, which paid off last weekend.
A look at the performances
The performances were both comprehensive and varied. The Oberwiehler Singers Quartet, known for enjoying singing in Kölsch, brought traditional and modern sounds to the stage. The song “I believe” by Udo Jürgens is particularly memorable, which deals with current events and was impressively heard together with the “Voices” in the chorus. The Latin piece “Locus iste” was also masterfully performed. The selection of pieces showed how diverse the program was.
Particularly noteworthy is the instrumental piece “Setting Sail” by Jens Uhlenhoff, which was performed by the Remperg trombone choir. The evening was rounded off by singing along to the final song, “Of Good Powers” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, which was performed together in the large audience and underlined the solidarity and gratitude of everyone present.
Tradition and modernity
The Oberwiehler Singers Quartet celebrated its 75th anniversary two years ago and has since then constantly modernized the tastes of its repertoire without neglecting the roots of traditional literature. Ralf Zimmermann has led the choir since 2004 and is supported by his commitment and enthusiasm for music. The concert in the Wiehler Church represented a successful combination of well-known sounds and new musical influences, which not only thrilled the long-established listeners, but also won new fans.
The audience response was overwhelming and the standing ovation was a reward for the hard work and dedication of the participants. The culture of cooperation in the region ensures a lively music scene that will continue to have some highlights in the future.
