Cologne, October 11, 2025 - While children today are often busy with tablets and smartphones, an exciting event offers the opportunity to immerse themselves in history in a playful way. Under the motto “Playing through the city's history” a very special event will take place on Thursday, October 16th at 4 p.m. in the Retro Station at the Institute for City History in Recklinghausen. The event is aimed at children aged 7 to 10 and promises an unforgettable experience. A maximum of six participants can look forward to an afternoon in which they get to know life in the Stone Age, Bronze Age and the Middle Ages.
Registration is done in advance by email stadtgeschichte@recklinghausen.de and is necessary due to the limited number of participants. Tours of exhibits and various games that bring the different eras to life are planned.

Education through history

Interest in historical topics is not only great in Recklinghausen. Teaching history to children is also being promoted in other cities. The Vienna City and State Archives in the Gasometer offer exciting tours for elementary school students. Here, school classes have the chance to visit the archive on excursions and deal with topics such as the lives of children 200 years ago or medical practices during the time of Maria Theresa. What particularly stands out are the haptic experiences offered to the young researchers - they can create their own certificates and take them home with them. The tour also covers the importance of the archive for the city's collective memory as well as an exciting marathon of discovery in the archive depot. These initiatives aim to educate younger generations about the importance of history and stimulate their curiosity. How wien.gv.at reports, children can learn in a playful way how valuable historical documents are.

The Institute for Urban History in Frankfurt is similarly committed. There is a wide range of options for students and teachers here. From workshops on city history topics to teaching materials that are available for download - the educational institutions use every opportunity to promote historical knowledge. Especially the workshops on topics such as “Paulskirche – a place of democracy?!” and “School Back in the Day” are popular and offer exciting insights into history. The connection between creativity and history is also very important in Frankfurt, where children can take part in projects that deal with the topic of migration or resistance against National Socialism. These and many other activities are part of the program, which offers a variety of learning opportunities for both students and teachers, such as stadtgeschichte-ffm.de represents.

Learn through play

In times when digitalization and modern technologies have a major influence on our lives, the imparting of historical knowledge remains an essential part of education. Events such as “Playing through the city's history” and the archives' diverse offerings not only offer children the opportunity to learn through play, but also promote their interest in their own history and identity. The combination of physical experiences, creative workshops and informative tours ensures that history comes to life and gives children a sense of belonging and understanding of their roots.

In this sense, the event in Recklinghausen is a wonderful opportunity not only to read history, but to actually experience it. Maybe a few more children will decide to sign up and spend an exciting afternoon in the world of the past!
