New shine for the Lüttringhausen city library: renovation of the fire station!
The Lüttringhausen district library is not just a place for books, it is a living part of the community. Martin Kalhöfer, who has been visiting the library regularly for 60 years, still remembers the beginnings in the town hall and children's classics like “The Big, Fat Pancake”. As chairman of the Lütteraten support association, he is proud of the large number of children who discover the library and diligently borrow books. This is also emphasized by qualified librarian Yvonne Jacobs, who emphasizes the importance of media for the development of children.( RGA )
The library has a long history dating back over a century, founded by Richard Gertenbach. There have been ups and downs over the years, like in 2008 when the library was about to close. However, thanks to a dedicated signature campaign, this was prevented. Today, numerous initiatives are underway to expand the offerings and transform the library into a modern, barrier-free center.
A move with great potential
The planned move project to the old Lüttringhauser fire station finally seems to be taking shape. The renovation is intended not only to expand the library, but also to make it a modern meeting place for the community. A wide range of offerings are planned, such as lectures, film screenings and a library garden. Particular attention is paid to the contemporary design of the rooms, which will be equipped with comfortable sofas and coffee areas.( Lüttringhauser Anzeiger )
The building permit is expected early next week, which increases the anticipation for everyone involved. However, Nicole Grüdl-Jakobs, the head of the municipal education center, points out that the bureaucratic processes can cause delays. “It is not the funding or the lack of tradesmen that is holding us back, but the many authorities involved,” she explains. The city of Remscheid had already applied for funding in 2022, which is now available to make the library a real “third place” in the village.
A place for all generations
The library is particularly popular with students who use it before graduating from high school to optimally prepare for exams. Vanessa Arntzen, the second chairwoman of the Lütteraten, sees the library as an important alternative to her children's usual media consumption. The large selection of genres, ranging from crime novels to biographies to children's literature, is highly valued by readers. There are also digital media such as audio books and educational games, which means the library is also present in the digital world.( RGA )
Preparations are in full swing. The plans for the move are not only intended to improve the spatial conditions, but also to present a new concept that is tailored to the needs of modern users. The opening of the new library in summer 2027 could herald a new chapter in the history of the district library that will delight generations.
