Power outage in Remscheid: Fire brigade saves 700 households in a flash!

On June 15, 2025, there was a significant disruption to the power supply in the Falkenberg district of Remscheid during the night. The problem was quickly traced to a defective cable, which was the cause of the power outage due to wear and tear. After less than an hour, a large part of the district was supplied with electricity again, although around 50 households were initially affected and remained temporarily in the dark. The Remscheid fire department reacted promptly and warned citizens via the NINA WarnApp to inform them about the situation.

In order to provide the affected residents with the best possible support, a total of three emergency vehicles were sent to the closed area. The emergency services immediately set up information and emergency call points at the “Falkenberg” bus stop and in the surrounding area. These offices not only offered up-to-date information, but also the opportunity for affected citizens to make emergency calls.

Supply at contact points

Particularly important was the establishment of two contact points by the German Red Cross (DRK Remscheid), which were operated at the corners of Falkenberger Strasse / Im Mittenfeld and on Falkenberger Strasse, near house number 18. There people could get hot water, tea and coffee and charge their mobile phones. These offers of assistance were particularly valuable as telecommunications may have been limited in the affected area, which could severely impact communicative exchanges.

The operation in Falkenberg involved a total of around 35 to 40 emergency services who worked in collaboration with the DRK and the energy suppliers to eliminate the disruption. The first all-clear was given on the morning of June 15th. By 1:00 p.m. the situation was largely back under control.

Preparing for future failures

Such incidents are not only annoying, but can also have far-reaching consequences. The need for well-thought-out emergency planning is unmistakable. According to a post on Saurugg, both authorities and the population should prepare for possible long-lasting power outages. The loss of power supply can have enormous consequences: critical infrastructure is affected, communication comes to a standstill and the supply of water and its transport is severely restricted.

The feedback on the quick response from the fire department and the DRK is consistently positive. Citizens felt well informed and quickly supported during the disruption. Preparations for future emergencies are all the more important so that community supplies are maintained even in exceptional situations. In particular, it makes it clear how important personal precautions and neighborly help are in such crises in order to overcome the challenges together.
