A terrible accident occurred in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, on Friday evening: an explosion in a terraced house completely destroyed the building. Residents reported a loud bang that could be heard from afar and triggered an alarm. Emergency services were alerted immediately because the thick smoke was visible from a great distance. The situation is devastating for an 83-year-old man who has been missing since the incident and of whom there is currently no trace. This reports Radio Erft.
The fire department had its hands full trying to bring the fire that broke out after the detonation under control. A total of 24 local residents were looked after by the rescue workers on site; two people had to be taken to hospital with injuries. A firefighter also suffered injuries due to smoke inhalation and was treated. The situation is serious because the adjacent terraced houses are currently uninhabitable and two of the buildings are considered at risk of collapse. Around 140 firefighters are actively deployed and are supported by the Technical Relief Agency (THW).
Causes of detonation
The exact cause of the detonation has not yet been determined, but it can be said that the term “detonation” in the area of combustion describes a spontaneous ignition that can occur in the cylinder of an engine. This causes part of the air-fuel mixture to ignite before the expected time, resulting in a rapid increase in pressure. It remains to be seen whether a similar cause is also responsible for the incident in Wolfenbüttel. An excavator and a crane are used to remove the structurally endangered parts of the building in an environmentally friendly manner.

“We are not giving up hope of finding the missing elderly gentleman,” announced a spokesman for the emergency services. The entire community is watching the rescue operations with fascination, hoping that the senior citizen can still be rescued from the rubble alive.
