Large fire brigade operation in Neuss: balcony fire quickly extinguished!

What a morning in Neuss-Norf! On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the fire department was called at 9:13 a.m. to a room fire on the 2nd floor of an apartment building on Südstrasse. When the emergency services arrived, they found a fire on the balcony with burning furnishings. Some of the flames rose threateningly up the facade, but fortunately the building had already been evacuated so no people were in danger.

The fire department used breathing apparatus to fight the fire directly. The turntable ladder was brought into position to enable possible extinguishing measures from outside. The rapid intervention of the emergency services quickly paid off: the fire was quickly brought under control, it was successfully prevented from spreading to the interior, and there was no sign of the smoke spreading either. Follow-up work was then carried out to remove embers before the site was handed over to the police. To make matters worse, there were no injuries and the police have now started investigating the cause of the fire, as news.de reports.

A look back: incidents in the region

Similar operations were not uncommon in the past. For example, the fire department was alerted to an operation on Hardenbergstrasse on June 29, 2025. There, smoke from an attic apartment attracted attention, which initially led to remarkable access via the turntable ladder because the apartment door was difficult to open. While the fire brigade was checking the slightly smoke-filled apartment, a deflagration occurred that caused some of the windows to burst. In this case, the emergency services were able to quickly bring the fire in the bathroom under control, but the apartment was then uninhabitable. Here too, the team remained uninjured and handed the site over to the police after two hours to further investigate the cause of the fire, according to feuerwehr.de.

Fire statistics and their meaning

These current operations are part of a larger trend highlighted by the CFS CTIF's recent fire statistics report for 2022. According to the report, which analyzes data from 55 countries and represents 1/5 of the world's population and 42 cities, the type of fire service operations plays a crucial role. In particular, fire brigade operations, fire victims and firefighter deaths are examined for the period 2018-2022. A table in the report also shows the distribution of fires by cause, while a separate chapter is dedicated to forest fires. This information underscores the need for an active fire service community and strengthens the call for more engagement and feedback, as ctif.org highlights.

However, in view of recent incidents and the ongoing efforts of the fire department, it is to be hoped that the number of operations will decrease in the future and such fires will soon be a thing of the past.
