In the last few days, the traffic situation in Siegerland and Wittgenstein, as well as in the neighboring districts of Olpe and Altenkirchen, has noticeably worsened. A look at the current situation shows that construction sites and train cancellations have a major impact on commuters and travelers in the region. The RE9 line from Siegen to Cologne is particularly affected. Although the travel time for this connection is around 90 minutes, passengers often have to allow more time due to delays and constant cancellations. There are partial failures on the RE 12, RE 22 and RB 24 lines, and the RE 9 connection is not the only victim of the overload.
Construction sites and road traffic
But it's not just the railways that are struggling with problems. Road traffic is also affected by a large number of construction sites. Federal highway 508 is currently closed in Kredenbach, leading to massive traffic jams. There is also further construction work in Allenbach that is putting additional strain on traffic. The large construction project at Schleifmühlchen also keeps drivers on their toes. A new roundabout has been under construction here since May 2023, which will entail further restrictions in the coming months.
The number of train cancellations has reached alarming proportions in recent years. According to a report by WDR Over 20 million train kilometers were canceled in 2024, an increase of 26 percent compared to 2023. A sixth of all regional train routes remained impassable, which significantly dampened the travel experiences of commuters in the region.
Lack of staff as a critical factor
A central problem appears to be the lack of staff. Around a third of train cancellations are due to late or sick staff. This shows that not only the infrastructure, but also the staffing in rail transport urgently needs to be improved in order to ensure punctuality and enable commuters to travel reliably.
