On November 15, 2025, the 49th edition of the SG Wenden South Sauerland Run took place, an event known for both top sporting achievements and tragic moments. In the run, which was considered the final event in the 2025 Endurance Cup, a 58-year-old participant collapsed during the main 10-kilometer run. The chairman of SG Wenden, Holger Keller, expressed deep sympathy for the relatives of the deceased and thanked the emergency services for their quick action. In view of the tragic incident, the planned award ceremony after the competition was briefly canceled. Henning Grüne, the second chairman, informed the participants about the medical emergency and the decision to cancel the honor. Spontaneous applause from the athletes gathered in the hall confirmed that the decision was appropriate. Most participants only received information about the runner's death when they were already on their way home.

The event in detail

The South Sauerland Run took place in the school, sports and cultural center in Wenden and offered participants various running routes. In addition to the main run of 10 kilometers, there were also ratings for a 5 km hobby run and for kids runs of 200 and 400 meters. The age group ranking was carried out according to the German Athletics Regulations (DLO), with the youngest participants, born in 2020 and younger, able to run free of charge. The first discipline, the Kids Run over 200 meters, started at 1:10 p.m., followed by further competitions. The participants in the main running distance of 10 kilometers started at 2:55 p.m. All runners had the opportunity to change in peace and start the race in good conditions.
