Traffic chaos in Siegerland: construction sites and train cancellations drive users to despair!

A lot is currently happening in the region around Siegen and the rail traffic towards Cologne. The SZ traffic sticker provides information about the latest construction sites and traffic problems that are making life difficult for commuters and travelers. The Severinstrasse in Kredenbach and Allenbach could actually act as a bottleneck - here it is literally coming to a standstill due to a construction site on the federal highway 508. If you don't want to rely on the rails, you may have to be patient.

Train travelers can currently expect a certain amount of delays and cancellations on the Rhein-Sieg-Express (RE9) from Siegen to Cologne, which often exceed the 90 minutes travel time stated in the timetable. Train cancellations occur more frequently on this route, and that annoys some commuters. The route includes important stops such as Aachen Hbf, Cologne Hbf and Siegen Hbf, with the entire route being 140 kilometers long and can be completed with an average duration of 2 hours and 10 minutes, according to  Train timetables.

Transport offerings and infrastructure

There are some positive aspects to report, especially for cyclists: taking bicycles on board the RE9 is permitted, but limited, and wheelchair-accessible toilets are also available on board. For anyone who commutes to work or enjoys the leisure activities in the area, the rail connection is an attractive option, even if there are currently some hurdles.

The mega construction site at Schleifmühlchen in Siegen should also be mentioned. The construction of a new roundabout began here in May 2023, which will significantly change traffic flow in the city. A measure that is necessary to improve traffic flow, even if the immediate effects are currently anything but positive.

A look at the numbers

A comprehensive annual report of the VDV addresses current topics in local public transport. The focus includes not only developments in passenger transport, but also the ideas collected from the departments and national groups in Berlin and Brussels. Such statistics are important in order to define the framework for future projects and to strengthen mobility in the region in the long term.
