New mayor is elected – Where the women are missing!

There is a breath of fresh air on the political stage in the Steinfurt district region. On September 14, 2025, exciting decisions will be made for voters, as the mayoral elections in 23 municipalities are already casting their shadows. From Lengerich to Wettringen – citizens can hope for new faces in the town halls, because the incumbents are withdrawing. That reported Radio RST in the latest reporting.

Although a breath of fresh air is certainly blowing, there is a certain flaw in the field of applicants: in the five towns of Lengerich, Metelen, Nordwalde, Steinfurt and Wettringen, no women will lead the citizenship in the future. All new mayoral candidates are men. Meanwhile, in another seven municipalities there are only confirmations of the incumbents. Voters in Horstmar, Ladbergen, Laer, Lienen, Mettingen, Rheine and Saerbeck can only vote “yes” or “no” on whether the current mayors should continue to be at the top.

Local elections – the key data

The upcoming local elections are not the only exciting elections in the region. An early federal election took place on February 23, 2025, the results of which have already been published for constituencies 123 and 127. The election for district administrator will also take place on September 14, 2025, and proposals could be submitted until July 7. Anyone who wanted to be present at the meeting to approve the election proposals on July 16th could even watch it up close in the town hall.

The structure of local elections in Germany is clearly regulated. As the Federal Agency for Civic Education informed, the Basic Law regulates the basic procedures of elections in Article 28. The focus is on direct elections and citizen participation. It is worth noting that EU citizens are also eligible to vote, bringing diversity to the electorate.

Candidates for town halls

The list of mayoral candidates is long and varied. The discussion about the occupation of the town halls promises some interesting political debates. Here is a selection of the candidates running for mayor:

  • Altenberge: Karl Reinke (parteilos), Jan Röschenkämper (CDU)
  • Emsdetten: Detlef Gritz (Emsdettener Liste), Daniel Hellwig (CDU), Oliver Kellner (Grüne), Eva Nie (SPD)
  • Greven: Dietrich Aden (CDU), Stefan Giebel (Linke), Christian Kriegeskotte (SPD)
  • Hörstel: David Ostholthoff (SPD), Andreas Winnemöller (parteilos)
  • Metelen: Ralf Maletz (CDU), Stefan Mening (Die Partei)
  • Lengerich: Michael Rottmann (parteilos), Björn Schilling (SPD)

A total of 46 candidates are standing for election in 23 municipalities, the majority of applications coming from men. The current status suggests that the political landscape in Steinfurt is well mixed, but it remains to be seen whether these changes will influence voter behavior.

The next local elections and the associated decisions will undoubtedly bring a breath of fresh air into the region's town halls. Exciting times lie ahead, and voters can be curious to see what direction the political change will take.
