1,000 new trees for Viersen: Green glimmer of hope for the future!

As the city of Viersen prepares for a green future, an impressive 1,000 new trees will be planted today. This large planting campaign is part of the nationwide “NRW plants” initiative, which aims to treat nature respectfully and combat the effects of climate change. The new trees will be planted on a municipal site near Boisheim and are intended to replace damaged stands that have had to be felled in recent years due to disease and the effects of climate change. Among the tree species planted are copper beech, lime and oak, all of which will help strengthen local biodiversity.

What is particularly worth mentioning is that healthy old oak trees on site provide shade for the young trees and thus enable a perfect start to life. Mayor Sabine Anemüller and her successor Christoph Hopp symbolically planted the first tree, demonstrating their commitment to environmental protection. The neighboring communities of Brüggen, Schwalmtal and Niederkrüchten also do not miss this opportunity to actively contribute to reforestation.

A big step for North Rhine-Westphalia

The “NRW plants” campaign has set itself the goal of planting one million new trees in North Rhine-Westphalia. How forest-and-wood.nrw reported, the initiative started with a symbolic planting of an oak tree by Minister Silke Gorißen in Alpen, Wesel district. It became clear how important these measures are for climate protection and biodiversity. The state budget also enables municipalities that do not have their own land available to use state forest areas.

The State Forestry Administration is ready to take over the plantings and their future care. “This is not only a sign of hope, but also a long-term plan for the restoration of our forests,” says Thomas Kämmerling, head of Forest and Wood NRW. Numerous municipalities have already pledged support for this important campaign, and the first trees are to be planted in Kempen from autumn.

A heart for trees

The importance of tree planting is also emphasized by the SDW underlined, which has been active for almost 75 years. Every year on Arbor Day, April 25th, over 100,000 trees are planted. But the need for action is greater than ever: 277,000 hectares of forest in Germany are severely damaged and can no longer fulfill their important functions. The SDW leads by example and raises its voice for the restoration of forest functions.

Anyone traveling in Viersen and the surrounding communities in the coming weeks and months will be able to see the fruits of this initiative. The new trees are not only a gift to nature, but also an opportunity for everyone to actively contribute to our climate and strengthen their relationship with the forest.
