On November 7, 2025, the festive award ceremony for the sports badge team competition in the Warendorf district took place in the parish hall in Drensteinfurt. The best teams were awarded in a sports-loving atmosphere, with Drensteinfurt taking part in the competition for the first time. In total, more than 50 teams from the region were represented, a new record!
A team from Drensteinfurt was able to secure first place, which pleased not only the participants but also the organizers. Christof Kelzenberg from the Warendorf District Sports Association emphasized in his speech that there are no coincidences in sport and that the achievements achieved are the result of hard work. “Sport is more than just competition, it connects and motivates,” says Kelzenberg.
The competition from the perspective of the participants
In the team competition, the groups had to consist of four members, with at least one “novice” in the team, i.e. someone who was taking the sports badge for the first time. Participants had the choice between various disciplines such as shot put, swimming, jumping rope, sprinting, cycling and sling ball. This diverse selection ensures that participants can not only play to their strengths, but also try out new areas.
Mind you, the event also had a social aspect: Heiko Alte Epping from Stadtwerke Ostmünsterland thanked all the helpers and pointed out the importance of sport as a “social glue”. The new mayor of Drensteinfurt, Markus Wiewel, praised the commitment of Stadtwerke Ostmünsterland and the good cooperation in organizing the competition.
The prizes for the best teams
An exciting draw gave the competition additional thrill: eight of the almost 50 teams that competed were selected for the main prize draw. These teams came from Drensteinfurt, but also from places like Beckum, Oelde, Warendorf, Sassendorf and Ahlen. The prizes, sponsored by Stadtwerke Ostmünsterland, were quite tempting:

A review and an outlook
The Warendorf District Sports Association, in collaboration with the Ostmünsterland municipal utilities, has set an example with this team competition to encourage people of all ages to exercise. Frank Schott, President of the District Sports Association, recalled a decline in participants during the Corona period and emphasized that this competition serves to create new incentives for acquiring the sports badge. “The ambition and joy of movement should be strengthened,” said Schott.
Since the German Sports Badge, which is awarded for above-average physical performance, not only benefits the competition community but also contributes to general health promotion, it is hoped for a second edition next year. The conditions for participation remain unchanged: you need at least one new team member to promote team spirit and curiosity.
