Mysterious wall holds couple prisoner – A horror carnival in Hamburg!
However, Carnival in Cologne, a time of celebration and exuberance, can also cause strange events. Last Carnival Sunday, a couple in the cathedral city had to face an unusual challenge: They couldn't leave their apartment because a piece of chipboard was blocking their front door. The owner had taken the measure to protect the building from drunken revelers. But this took a dramatic turn - firefighters had to intervene to help the couple trapped inside.
The Netflix thriller “Brick”, which has just started in Cologne cinemas, tells a similar story. Protagonists Tim, played by Matthias Schweighöfer, and Olivia, portrayed by Ruby O. Fee, find themselves in a Hamburg apartment building that is blocked by a mysterious, black wall. Unexpectedly, their emotional relationship is also put to the test. A miscarriage has caused them to drift apart, and Olivia even plans to break up with Tim.
A mysterious chamber play
In the film, the two protagonists are confronted with the fact that they are trapped in their apartment due to the locked doors and windows. They are without cell phone reception or running water - a threatening situation that forms the core of the film and addresses the primal human fear of those trapped. Like Tim and Olivia, other neighbors also try to solve the mystery of the wall, but not everyone will survive this situation unscathed.
Philip Koch, the director and screenwriter of the film, describes being trapped as a metaphor for loneliness and depression. The dynamic between Tim and Olivia is the focus, and even in real life the two actors are a couple, which adds additional emotional depth to the story. The passionate filming culminated in a key scene, which was re-shot after initial difficulties as it had previously been perceived as “emotionally flat”.
A look at exciting thrillers
The current film landscape offers a variety of captivating mystery and thriller genres that tell similarly gripping stories. This is also how viewers come from Collider at their expense. Notable films include:
- Don’t Worry Darling (2022) – Eine junge Frau erlebt in einer perfekten Gemeinschaft verstörende Visionen.
- Blink Twice (2024) – Eine düstere Geschichte über Macht und Kontrolle.
- A Haunting in Venice (2023) – Ein neuer Fall für Hercule Poirot.
Although the plot of “Brick” is fast-paced, it is criticized at some points for being predictable, which may not satisfy all viewers. But the complex relationship between the protagonists and the central conflict surrounding the wall promise a gripping experience. Maybe there is a bit of magic in the art of storytelling that touches us all. Hopefully the couple in Cologne will soon find the freedom to celebrate the festival again without being held back by chipboard.
