Funding for historic locomotive: Feldbahn friends start project!
A truly historic moment for the Feldbahnfreunde Schermbeck-Gahlen e.V. is approaching! On June 18, 2025, the first steps were taken to restore the last remaining locomotive from the IDUNAHALL Schermbeck brickworks. In a celebratory ceremony, District Administrator Ingo Brohl, together with Lukas Hähnel from the Wesel District Economic Development Agency, handed over a funding commitment of 8,364 euros. This money will go directly to the exciting project that aims to refurbish and put this historic field railway locomotive back into service. Visitor rides on the locomotive are planned, a real treat, especially for school classes, who can experience an understanding of technology and the impressive history of sound transport.
Numerous guests were present at the symbolic handover, including Ulrich Stiemer, the deputy mayor of Schermbeck. The event was characterized not only by the emotional significance of the project, but also by a deep connection to the region. Michael Gorris was happy to accept the funding decision and spoke of the importance of keeping local history alive.
Unique conservation measure
The restoration work is more than just a technical undertaking, it is also a step towards preserving the region's cultural heritage. The locomotive, which once transported the clay deposits of the former roof tile works, will be used again for journeys along the historic routes after its completion. “It is extremely important to show future generations how this transport was carried out in earlier times,” said Gorris during the tour of the locomotive. The Foundation for Location and Future Securing, which was established in 2006, is dedicated to these special tasks and promotes forward-looking projects in the region.
Interestingly, the restoration will not be the only project of the field railway enthusiasts. The foundation also supports the expansion of the route on the banks of the Lippe, which further increases the attractiveness of the region. Visitors can look forward to numerous events and activities to be held in the coming months to continue telling the story of the train connections.
A look forward
The field railway friends take their mission seriously and want to keep the tradition alive. The funding and support from the community will be used to make not only the locomotive, but also the entire surrounding area attractive to the public. The initiative not only provides insight into the history of sound transportation, but also promotes community and understanding of technical developments.
