Robbery in Wuppertal: Father and son flee after a robbery

After an attack on a 53-year-old man in Wuppertal-Oberbarmen early Saturday morning and another robbery incident in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, the events are shining a spotlight on increasing violent crime in the region. At around 12:30 a.m., the two suspected perpetrators, a 55-year-old father and his 24-year-old son, became active in the parks near the banks of the Wupper. They attacked the victim, beat him and stole his cell phone before fleeing towards the banks of the Wupper. According to WDR, the son was arrested on site while the father tried to cross the Wupper.

In a desperate attempt to hide, the 55-year-old wanted to climb a tree. But the police found him in the river and the fire department got him out of the water with a ladder. He had to be hospitalized due to hypothermia. Both men were prosecuted over the attack, while the victim sustained minor injuries in the attack.

Predatory attack on seniors

The security situation in Wuppertal is causing concern not only because of this incident. There was another robbery in February in which a 90-year-old man was attacked by two unknown people. While this attack also took place on the street, as Bild reported, the victim remained psychologically intact. The two teenagers who attacked him held him by the neck from behind and stole his shoulder bag. The police are asking for information from witnesses who saw anything related to this crime.

A look at violent crime in Germany

Thankfully, according to [Statista](https://de.statista.com/themen/11062/ criminalitaet-in-deutschland-violentcrime/), violent crimes are only a small part of the registered crimes in Germany, accounting for less than 4 percent. Nevertheless, these crimes, including murder, aggravated assault and robbery, have a strong impact on citizens' sense of security. The figures show that violent crime in 2024 reached its highest level since 2007, with around 217,000 cases. This increase is partly attributed to economic uncertainty and social pressures. Experts fear that ongoing mental health challenges exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic could have a growing impact on violent crime.

In view of what is happening in Wuppertal, it is important that the community sticks together and takes the security situation seriously. Tips about crimes can be sent directly to the police in order to stop those responsible and prevent future attacks.
