Wuppertal is committed to cycling: new cycle streets from spring 2025!

Wuppertal is facing exciting changes in the area of cycling. In spring 2025, around Easter, two new cycle routes will be opened in the city Radiowuppertal reported. Construction work has already begun, particularly at the intersections of Loher Straße/Wartburgstraße and in the Farbmühle. Milling work is currently underway and the road will be resurfaced after the autumn holidays.

The new cycle streets are part of a comprehensive plan to promote cycling in Wuppertal. The costs for these new routes total around 130,000 euros. During the construction period, cyclists and drivers must expect restrictions on access and reduced parking options. A smooth rerouting is also ensured.

From cyclist to street star

The conversion of the Hardtufer street into a bicycle street is also planned for the turn of the year 2025. This would increase the number of cycle streets in Wuppertal to seven. There are currently five cycle streets: Luisenstrasse, Rutenbecker Weg, Tönniesstrasse, (Neue) Friedrichstrasse and Luhnsstrasse. On these roads, cyclists have priority over cars, which ensures greater safety and comfort on the paths.

But there's more: the city also has a comprehensive cycling concept in the pipeline. This concept is currently being updated and is intended to support Wuppertal on its way to becoming a bicycle city in 2025. The old concept dates back to 2003 and does not take into account many important changes to the road traffic regulations, including the release of one-way streets and special bus lanes. These innovations have noticeably changed the cycling situation in the city in recent years.

Local citizen participation

The Wuppertal city administration relies on citizen participation to develop the new cycling concept. Several events have already taken place where residents have been able to contribute suggestions and ideas. A working group consisting of city employees and representatives from bicycle interest groups meets regularly to discuss progress. The project is coordinated by the Aachen city and traffic planning office Kaulen. Feedback can also be sent directly to the city administration; the contact person for this area is Norina Peinelt, who is responsible for local mobility wuppertal.de so reported.

Another important aspect is the ongoing updating of cycle path data. This includes a variety of categorized cycle paths, such as combined walking and cycle paths, railway cycle paths and releases for certain road sections. The data set is updated regularly so that citizens always have access to the latest information. The data is provided under the Open Data License, which increases transparency and usage options, as shown offendaten-wuppertal.de can be read.

The initiative to improve cycling traffic in Wuppertal clearly shows that the city is on the right track to sustainably increase the quality of life and mobility for cyclists.
