Russia policy under fire: Schröder and Merkel's mistakes exposed!

In a current discourse about the mistakes of Germany's Russia policy, Katja Gloger and Georg Mascolo take a critical look at the otherwise successful Chancellors Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel in their book “The Failure”. The two authors are convinced that these politicians have not yet admitted any mistakes in their Russia policy. In 2020, Wolfgang Schäuble said in the “Handelsblatt”: “We didn’t want to see it,” thereby addressing the missed warning signals. Gloger and Mascolo support this with personal experiences with Vladimir Putin, whom they describe as polite and charming, but with a dominant claim to power. However, developments since the Ukraine war show that Russian aggression, especially after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, has taken on a threatening dimension.

A noteworthy aspect is the warning from Olaf Scholz, who recently informed that Putin had already made his aggressive decision two years before the war in Ukraine. This revelation sheds a whole new light on Germany's foreign policy to date. Gloger reports great horror that manifested itself after February 24, 2022, when the reality of the failed policy became apparent. Another important point is that the Foreign Office and the judiciary made files accessible as quickly as possible, which increases transparency. But the question remains: Why is it that those responsible in the political sphere continue to ignore mistakes? The authors question whether Putin was ever interested in democracy.

New threats from Russia

In addition to these political mistakes, Florian Flade, investigative journalist at WDR, highlights the growing threat of Russian underwater espionage. This topic was covered in the show “Ronzheimer,” and Flade gave interesting insights into Russia’s investments in this form of espionage since the Cold War. A Cypriot company, “Mostrello Commercial”, was identified as acting as a front company for Russia. According to his findings, even wreck sites like that of the “Estonia” are being used for military exercises. This is despite an existing ban on diving - a serious issue that could affect all NATO member states.

Flade explains that the ability to acoustically identify ships underwater offers military advantages. This makes it clear that technological advances have reached a new dimension in the conflict between Russia and the West. Germany, as one of the main targets of Russian aggression, must face these threats to ensure a secure peace.

In summary, the mistakes in past politics should not just remain in political rhetoric. Given current geopolitical developments, it is time for both politicians and the public to open their eyes and push for necessary changes. Dialogue about mistakes, not denial of them, could be the first step towards improving the situation.
