New village square in Oberzissen: meeting place for everyone!

A new era for Oberzissen begins on July 13, 2025 with the ceremonial inauguration of a new village square on Bachstrasse. Local mayor Christof Bürger is proud that an inviting meeting place has been created from a once gray gravel area. The square is adorned by an artistically designed column made of Mendig basalt, which represents typical views of the place and is therefore not only an eye-catcher, but also part of Oberzissen's identity. The transformation was initiated by the disclosure of the Brenkbach, which was intended to give the community a new face, as Rhein-Zeitung reports.

The construction of the square is part of a broader initiative to improve the quality of life in the community. In addition to the redesign of the village square, tourist infrastructure measures were also introduced that make the Brohltal more attractive as a holiday destination. In April 2023, among other things, new mobile home parking spaces were opened at the sports grounds and six combinable mountain bike routes and three hiking trails were presented in the area. These projects cost a total of almost 70,000 euros, of which 35,000 euros were provided as funding. Christof Bürger described the opening of these projects as a special moment for the community, which is based on years of planning, as oberzissen.de highlights.

Tourism developments and new routes

The new range of hiking and biking routes is intended to attract both locals and visitors. The hiking trails are well signposted and offer an attractive nature experience for everyone. These include:

Community representatives Dieter Speicher and Ulrich Schütz worked intensively on developing these hiking trails. The new panoramic path is officially celebrated for the first time at the inauguration of the village square and contributes to the development of the surrounding nature.

Creative elements and community spirit

Particularly noteworthy is the creative touch that contributes to the inauguration of the square. A work of art in the form of a motif cake, designed by master confectioner Rafaela Wieczorek-Laux, was presented for the celebration. This illustrates the community spirit that exists in Oberzissen and shows how local talent is integrated into projects. Brohltal's mayor Johannes Bell described the construction work as an enrichment for the municipality and emphasized the need for mobile home parking spaces in the region in order to further expand the tourist offerings.

These developments show how important it is to keep places alive and at the same time to create a living environment that combines both tradition and contemporary demands through good planning and citizen engagement. While the transformations in Oberzissen are already bringing joy and cohesion, the future of the community will only shine brighter through such initiatives. The people here know: There’s something going on!
