Iron Wedding in Haßloch: 65 years of love and adventures of Agathe and Karl-Heinz!

Agathe and Karl-Heinz Kunz are a very special couple, because today, June 24th, they are celebrating their iron wedding anniversary - 65 years of marriage. In Haßloch, where they have deep roots, they look back on a shared history that began in 1955 in a dance lesson in the Old Löwer Brewery. That was when the foundation was laid for a relationship that has now spanned generations.

On June 24, 1960, the two married not only in a civil ceremony, but also in the Christ Church. They celebrated this special day with over 70 guests on Agathe's parents' property in Brunnengasse. Karl-Heinz Kunz, born in 1937 and an active member of the Haßloch Carneval Association, and his wife Agathe, née Reis, born in 1939, have since mastered many ups and downs together.

An active life

The Kunzes never left much unused. They particularly enjoy cycling, often before breakfast. Their popular destination: the “Falkehäuschen” on the Speyerbach, where the two spent many cozy hours. Even today, Karl-Heinz often sits in the saddle, while Agathe can no longer cycle due to health problems. Together they explored countries such as Turkey, Tunisia and the USA several times. They always lived an active life and even today go on city tours by car and in wheelchairs.

Most recently they visited the Haßloch economic market and the Rhineland-Palatinate Day in Neustadt. Although they stay in a small circle on their wedding day and wait for visitors, they have plans for a celebration next weekend with their family. “We wish for health and many shared experiences in the future,” says Agathe, who is happy that Karl-Heinz is taking over the gardening work.

Traditions surrounding the Iron Wedding

The Iron Wedding, which is considered a symbol of stability and strength, is celebrated in Germany with appreciation and various customs. While memories are important, gifts such as personalized items or practical everyday items are also appreciated. Karl-Heinz will even conjure up a homemade cake for the special occasion - a tradition that is very popular in her family. Wedding.info describes that after 25 years it is celebrated with a silver wreath and after 50 years with golden gifts. The Iron Wedding thus represents the strength of marriage that has grown over the past decades.

From September 2024 to August 2025, the Diocese of Limburg has invited couples celebrating their iron wedding, gold wedding or grace wedding to take part in a festive service. Such offers strengthen family cohesion and allow love to continue to blossom over the years - an aspect that Agathe and Karl-Heinz particularly value.

Overall, the Kunzes reflect that they not only shared a path together, but also found great happiness in the family with a son, two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters. Her story reminds us that real love is shaped by time, patience and mutual respect.
