Kirchheimbolanden: Digital passport photo process ready for citizens!
In Kirchheimbolanden, a real digitalization push is being launched for citizens. From May 1, 2025, passport photos for identity cards and passports in Germany must be transmitted digitally. A new one PointID device in the Citizens' Office is tackling the challenges of the new regulation. This not only makes the storage of paper photos obsolete, but also radically shortens the processing time - passport photos taken with the new device are ready for use within 48 hours.
The new regulation aims to improve the security and quality of passport photos. According to the Consumer advice center Digital passport photos are intended to prevent manipulation, such as so-called morphing. This involves merging photos of several people into a new image, which can be misused. Risks are to be minimized through digital recording, encrypted transmission and an automated biometric suitability check.
New requirements for passport photos
The new regulation not only brings digital images into play, but also specific technical specifications. Anyone who takes passport photos must adhere to specifications that ensure a uniform level of quality. The technology allows users to easily create passport photos with their smartphone. An online passport photo generator adjusts images thanks to AI, removes the background and puts the image in the required format. This offers flexibility and speed when creating new passport photos.
The technical requirements are clearly defined: A passport photo must be in the 35 × 45 mm format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and a light, monochrome background. The face and expression must be neutral, although those who wear glasses are not allowed to wear sunglasses. There are numerous small errors that can cause an image to be rejected, such as overexposure or shadows. If all of this is followed, nothing stands in the way of successfully applying for a new ID card.
Important deadlines and delivery
Another highlight of the new guidelines is the possibility of receiving your ID card or passport by post after applying - for a fee of 15 euros. From August 2025, the digital route will be the sole focus; Until then, paper photos can still be submitted. The transition period until July 31, 2025 gives time to adjust to the new situation.
For residents in Kirchheimbolanden and Rockenhausen, the new PointID device in the citizens' office is a practical solution to prepare for the changes quickly and efficiently. This means that not only the citizens' office, but also the entire Donnersberg district becomes a digital pioneer when it comes to applying for ID documents.
