Creative competition: Minecraft fans design Kandel for 1000 euros!

Kandel in October is all about creativity and digital construction. On October 10th, an exciting Minecraft competition was launched with the motto “Design the Kandler Platzl”. This is organized by a colorful mix of actors, including the youth center, the city management, the KuKuK association as well as the Kandel Protestant Church and the Germersheim Evangelical Youth. The competition is aimed at all age groups and invites you to realize your own ideas in the digital world. Whether young or old, everyone is welcome to take part and present their visions.

The challenge is to design the prefabricated Minecraft world “Kandler Platzl”, which the youth center provided. The prerequisite for participation is a computer and Minecraft version 1.21.1. Unfortunately, console players have to stay outside. Submissions should be emailed to einversandplaetzel@gmail.com, also including name and age. Questions can be directed to the City Manager via this email or by telephone.

Prices and evaluation criteria

The participants' efforts are not only rewarded by the feeling of having helped shape the event. There are also tangible prizes for the best entries. Overall, the prizes are awarded in three categories: Boys and girls up to 15 years old and adults aged 16 and over can win vouchers worth between 50 and 100 euros. In addition, the “Fame and Honor” prize will be awarded for the best implementable idea, which is worth a whopping 1000 euros. The award ceremony will take place on December 21st at 3 p.m. on the Christmas market stage in Kandel, where a committee consisting of the organizers and a political representative will choose the best entries.

Various criteria are used in the evaluation. These include the feeling of well-being and community, the liveliness of the square and the “wow” criterion, which stands for the very special ideas. Submissions are open until November 23, 2025, and to help participants get started, a tutorial video is available for download.

A role model for other cities

The Kandler competition is not the only creative project that contributes to urban design in digital space. In Minden, another German example, the “Craft4Democracy” project will take place during the autumn holidays. Here young people have the opportunity to realize their ideas for a city of the future in Minecraft. Accompanied by experienced media educators, the participants learn about topics such as democracy and participation, which serves as an inspiring concept for the Kandler competition.
