Mimmo Scarmato becomes the new mayor of Grünstadt: a breath of fresh air for the homeland!

On June 15, 2025, a new chapter opened for the city of Grünstadt: Mimmo Scarmato (CDU) was elected as the new mayor with an impressive 59.9 percent of the vote. His competitor Christoph Spies from the SPD achieved 40.1 percent. Scarmato is the successor to Klaus Wagner (CDU), who did not stand for re-election.

The 50-year-old, who was born in Grünstadt and lives in the city with his wife Christina and daughter Lara, brings a wealth of experience in local administration. As a graduate in finance (FH), he worked, among other things, in the tax office in Frankenthal and Worms-Kirchheimbolanden. He has been working in various positions in Ludwigshafen's financial administration since 2008 and has headed the city administration's finance department since 2022. In 2024 he will have acquired the necessary skills to qualify for higher service. “Grünstadt is my home,” emphasizes Scarmato, who plans to pursue a future-oriented and citizen-oriented policy for the next eight years.

Visions and projects for Grünstadt

Scarmato relies on strong volunteerism and sees this as the heart of the community in Grünstadt. Volunteers not only bring solidarity, but also responsibility for others to the city. His plan includes supporting and recognizing this valuable work. He would like to promote voluntary club work and improve the clubs' financial resources. A main goal is the rapid renovation of the Rudolf Harbig facility, which ensures a modern infrastructure for sports and school sports. “We urgently need a new sanitary wing,” he says, given the poor conditions of the current premises.

In addition, the renovation of schools and club buildings is on his agenda, which should be pushed forward in parallel. Scarmato knows: “There is a lot of work ahead of us, but I have a good handle on the challenges that we have to tackle together.”

Election process and term of office

The mayoral election in Grünstadt was characterized by a direct election process in which the term of office of the new mayor is set to last six years. The elections can consist of one or two rounds, depending on the number of votes obtained in the first round. If an absolute majority is not achieved there, a runoff election will follow between the two applicants with the most votes. These aspects are recorded in electoral law, as can be read on the Education for Democracy website.

With Mimmo Scarmato, Grünstadt now has a mayor who not only knows his craft, but also has a deep commitment to his homeland. According to him, under his leadership the city will not only be managed, but also made lively - for everyone who lives and works there.
