Last week there was a tragic incident in Karlsruhe: a mobile home fire claimed the life of a twelve-year-old boy and seriously injured his mother. Two dogs could not be saved from the flames. According to SWR, the police suspect that a technical defect was responsible for the accident, which deeply shocked the camper community.
The accident happened a week ago and the campers are greatly affected. A camper meeting in Kandel, where 20 camping vehicles gathered, became a platform for discussions about the incident. The participants, some of whom have known each other for years, exchange information about the events both on site and online. Particular attention should be paid to the gas bottles that were present in the motorhome and posed a risk of explosion. For safety reasons, the police closed the area of the accident.
New safety regulations for camping vehicles
The tragic events highlight safety precautions in mobile homes. From June 19, 2025, liquid gas systems in mobile homes and caravans must be regularly checked by experts, a step that many campers support at the meeting in Kandel. This regulation aims to prevent accidents that can occur due to uncontrolled gas leaks. The ADAC emphasizes that the gas test is carried out independently of the general inspection and must be renewed every two years. This exam can cost between 40 and 80 euros and usually takes between 20 and 45 minutes.
Despite these new regulations, equipping with fire extinguishers does not remain a legal requirement in Germany. However, things are different in other countries; Here it is often the rule. The desire for greater safety is also spurred by the discussions following the fire. Campers are now eagerly awaiting the report on the exact cause of the fire so that they can learn lessons for their own behavior.
Fire notification and fire brigade measures
Another mobile home fire occurred on December 28, 2024 in Kleve, where the fire department was called to a mobile home parking lot due to thick smoke. According to a report from the fire brigade, the affected vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and firefighters had to use two C-pipes to fight the flames. Fortunately, there were no people in the vehicle at the time of the fire, and the timely removal of gas bottles prevented anything worse from happening.
The large number of incidents illustrates the need for safety precautions and preventive measures. The camper community in Germany is now faced with the challenge of dealing more intensively with the issue of safety in order to avoid such tragic events in the future.
