Kaiserslautern is revolutionizing theme parks with VR innovation!
In the world of theme parks, Europa-Park in Rust has established itself as a real showpiece. The popular park has been captivating families and adventure seekers from Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate for almost 50 years. What makes this place so special? Every year millions of people flock to the park to experience the thrilling roller coasters, thrilling shows and state-of-the-art attractions. But an innovative idea from Kaiserslautern has now revolutionized the leisure fun experience: the integration of virtual reality (VR) into roller coaster rides. This is a product of a student project initiated by Thomas Wagner in the early 2010s. Back then, the goal was to combine VR and real roller coaster rides.
What initially began with dizzying challenges, such as seasickness due to a lack of movement coordination, over time developed into a resounding success. Wagner and Europa-Park experimented with the Blue Fire roller coaster and the combination of VR glasses and roller coaster ride, which led to the founding of the company VR Coasters led. Over the past decade, the company has grown into a global provider of VR experiences, now outfitting over 70 rides worldwide, including free fall towers and water park attractions. Among the current 200 projects there are also some roller coasters with several VR experiences.
Digital pioneers in the theme park industry
Europa-Park is not only unique in terms of VR, but was again named “Digital Champion” in Germany in 2025. How CoasterMag reports, the park received full points on a scale of 0 to 100 in a study conducted by “Focus Money,” making it the industry winner among theme and amusement parks. Around 15,000 companies were evaluated, and the criteria included aspects such as digitalization, technology and innovative corporate culture.
For years, Europa-Park has played a pioneering role in the use of virtual and augmented reality in the industry. The introduction of the VR attraction YULLBE by MACK One in 2020 and attractions such as Eurosat Coastiality and Alpenexpress Coastiality illustrate this impressively. In addition, the park has developed an app that has enabled visitors to navigate the park interactively since 2016 and was supplemented in 2020 with functions for effective visitor guidance.
Future-oriented innovations
The app allows users to reserve waiting times for attractions and make the most of the park's offerings. Another highlight is the introduction of the interactive augmented reality experience “Voltron ChARge” for the new roller coaster “Voltron Nevera powered by Rimac”. Europa-Park has thus positioned itself as a technological innovator, with Michael Mack, managing partner, emphasizing the need for digitalization for growth and extending the visitor experience, as well Amusement park tests confirmed.
But it's not just the big innovative steps that shape the image of Europa-Park. During the Corona pandemic, VR Coaster used the time to develop new ideas and strengthen the central headquarters in Kaiserslautern. With many employees coming directly from the university, the Kaiserslautern location remains a real center of innovation in the field of VR and theme parks.
In summary, Europa-Park is not only a place of joy and thrills, but also a prime example of how digitalization and creative ideas can go hand in hand to take leisure activities to a new level.
