Drunk rioter terrorizes the streets of Koblenz – 2.51 per mille!

On Monday afternoon, June 16, 2025, a 24-year-old man caused a stir on Viktoriastrasse in Koblenz. At around 4:50 p.m. he began rioting across the street, kicking and punching parked vehicles. In order to stop the situation, he also lay down in front of waiting cars at a red light. These chaotic scenes caused the man's already irritable temper to break out: he even verbally and physically attacked pedestrians in the Altlöhrtor area, as blick-aktuell.de reports.

The fortunate thing in this misfortune was that two plainclothes police officers happened to be nearby. They were able to intervene quickly when the rioter, understandably, reacted aggressively towards the officers and had to force them into the patrol car. A breath alcohol test showed an impressive 2.51 per mille - a value that explains why he had completely lost control over his behavior.

Focus on personality disorders

Excessive aggression and impulsive behavior, as we observed in this incident, are often signs of deeper psychological problems. According to neurologen-und-psychiater-im-netz.org, such behaviors can indicate antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). People with this disorder often experience social problems through reckless and violent behavior and often show little empathy for others.

Experts such as Prof. Wolfgang Gaebel from the DGPPN describe those affected as unpredictable and difficult to handle because they lack the necessary remorse or compassion. Social problems are often viewed as normal, which makes changing behavior even more difficult. The path to therapy is difficult because the motivation of those affected is often assessed as low, as highlighted in the reports.

Therapeutic approaches and their challenges

The psycharchives.org points out that those affected with antisocial characteristics have a disturbed understanding of the motives of others. As a result, they often misinterpret other people's emotions and intentions. A particularly disturbing aspect is that these people often do not feel any psychological pain in relation to the sensitivities of others and therefore see violence as an effective means.

Treating such disorders requires not only psychotherapy, but also a trusting relationship between therapist and patient. Role-playing games can be useful for analyzing conflicts and their solutions. However, a fundamental change in personality is often not possible and medication can only support psychotherapy. Approximately 3% of the male population exhibits such behavior, while it affects an estimated 1% of women.

The incident in Koblenz sheds a bright light on the challenges that both those affected and society face. Mentalization, i.e. understanding the emotional states of others, remains a major hurdle that needs to be overcome for many with antisocial disorders.
