Loneliness in old age: Successful lecture brings seniors together!

On November 10, 2025 there was a rainy but inspiring day in Neuwied. As part of the seventh national Demographic Week, the lecture “Loneliness in old age – is it necessary?” took place, organized by the Neuwied adult education center in collaboration with the city's senior citizens' advisory board. The theme of the week, “Together we create a home for all,” expresses the intention to be inclusive and find solutions to challenges of aging.

The event attracted many interested people who came together for coffee and cake. Not only was the problem of loneliness in old age addressed here, but the options for overcoming this challenge were also discussed. Hildegard Schanz, trainer for communication and personal development, explained important topics such as recognizing loneliness in everyday life, strategies to combat this loneliness and innovative forms of living.

Joint discussions and positive feedback

Brigitte Neumann, chairwoman of the seniors' advisory board, did not miss the opportunity to express her delight at the high turnout at the end of the event. This positive response shows that there is great interest in the topic and that many people are ready to actively combat loneliness in old age. Mayor Peter Jung took the opportunity to thank the organizers for their commitment and to express appreciation to the participants for coming.

A central goal of Demography Week is to strengthen caring communities in cities, villages and neighborhoods. This initiative is particularly important at a time when many older people feel isolated. The focus is on a self-determined life in old age, which is not only characterized by seclusion, but by community and support.

A call for discussion

The event made it clear that the issue of loneliness in old age is not just an individual matter, but also affects society as a whole. It encourages us to think about how each individual can contribute to improving the quality of life of older people through commitment and sensitivity.

Whether you have grandparents, neighbors or acquaintances – everyone can help create a little more community. Ultimately, it is important to combat loneliness, not only during this Demographic Week, but also beyond, in order to create a home for everyone.

For those interested, there are numerous resources and information about similar events or projects. Maybe you already have your own ideas about how you can create a bit more community in your neighborhood? After all, actions speak loudly – so get involved!
