Eßweiler celebrates 30 years of the village community center with a Roman silver spoon
There is a big celebration in Eßweiler! To mark the 30th anniversary of the village community center, a games and family festival will take place on the village square on Saturday, June 28th from 1:30 p.m. The anticipation in the town is palpable, not least because of a very special highlight: a silver spoon from Roman times will be on display during the celebrations, a truly historic piece that was once found in the church meadow.
The celebrations not only offer the opportunity to celebrate the village community center, which has developed over the years into a popular location for weddings, birthday parties and senior cafés, but also to honor the path that the village community has taken since the 1980s. A new building was originally planned, but this was rejected. Instead, an agricultural property in the middle of the village was converted, which was realized with construction costs of 1.5 million marks and extensive in-house work. No debt was incurred and a significant part of the financing came from grants amounting to around one million marks. [Rheinpfalz] reports that preparations for the festival are already in full swing.
Cultural performances and food
The festival program includes a variety of highlights, including a children's participation concert with the Stuttgart Saloniker, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Face painting and a chalk painting competition are also offered for younger guests. But adults don't miss out either: the food on offer ranges from coffee and cake to tarte flambée, which visitors can share with each other on the village square. For the safety of guests, the area from the monument to the extension of Krämelstrasse is closed to car traffic.
An exciting program continues in the evening with an exhibition opening at 8 p.m. This shows the results of the cultural workshop “ZeitArt” and historical finds from Eßweiler. The silver spoon mentioned, the jewel of the exhibition, has an inscription “Lucilianae vivas” and dates from the 4th century. The spoon is currently being kept in the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer and will be brought to Eßweiler for the celebrations. A highlight of the exhibition will also be the supervision of a lady from the museum to protect the valuable piece from prying eyes, as an alarm system could not be implemented.
Historical roots and Roman traditions
The event is not only a celebration of contemporary community life, but also an appreciation of Eßweiler's deep roots in history. Archaeological finds in the region - from Stone Age artifacts to Roman remains - provide evidence of the long history of settlement. Discoveries, including Roman pottery and fragments of a Roman estate, suggest a vibrant past. Finds such as the silver spoon demonstrate the connection to the Roman period, with such artifacts often being exhibited in the Palatinate Historical Museum, making this celebration all the more significant. Information about this historical background can be found on the [Eßweiler] website.
The fascinating history of Roman influences is not only noticeable in Eßweiler, but is also evident in places such as Villa Borg, a reconstructed Roman estate in Perl. These cultural sites show how deeply Roman myths and ways of life are embedded in the different regions. The range of local beers from Villa Borg, which is linked to myths and traditions, reflects the cultural network in the region and invites you to engage with this deeply rooted history, just as the celebration in Eßweiler does. Further insights into this fascinating connection between history and the present can be found on the [Villa Borg] website.
