Kusel City Council against citizen protests: Bledesberg wind farm in danger!
Something is happening in the southwest of Kusel: the planned Bledesberg wind farm is causing a stir among the citizens. As the Rhine Palatinate reports, the city council recently decided to revoke the existing development plan for this project. The wind farm is planned between the towns of Kusel, Ehweiler, Albessen and Pfeffelbach, and the first peak is expected to rise into the sky as early as 2026.
However, the decision to revoke the development plan triggered mixed feelings among citizens. There is already talk of possible legal disputes that could be triggered by the decision. While some welcome renewable energies as a promising solution, others express concerns about the impact on the landscape and quality of life.
The Bledesberg wind farm in detail
On April 21, 2023, the city council took the first step to repeal the “Bledesberg” development plan in order to enable a change. The new development plan is intended to include a total of six wind turbines with a height of up to 260 meters - in contrast to the 100 meters planned in the old plan. The Kusel-Altenglan municipality has already prepared a repeal statute for this purpose, which applies to the entire area of application of the development plan.
The area in which the wind turbines are to be built extends over around 53.2 hectares, north of Ehweiler and on the Bledesbach. There are several field names on the plan, so that the project is also well secured legally and administratively.
Public participation and financial benefits
The public will be included in the planning project and can submit their comments in writing or electronically until April 4, 2025. This transparency is intended to prevent citizens from feeling overwhelmed by the planned project and expressing their frustration in the form of protest. Comments that are not submitted by the deadline may not be taken into account, which underlines the importance of timely participation.
A non-negligible advantage of the wind farm is the introduction of the municipal tax, which amounts to up to 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour fed in. This aspect became loud Stat power made possible by changes to the Renewable Energy Sources Act and particularly benefits the communities surrounding the wind turbines. Municipalities can use these funds for infrastructure, education and social projects, benefiting both the local environment and residents.
The discussion about the Bledesberg wind farm shows that the expansion of renewable energies in the region is not only of a technical but also of a social nature. It remains to be seen whether the planned wind turbines will ultimately be built. The city council and the citizens of Kusel are facing an exciting time and will have to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages together.
