Tasting life again: cooking class for grieving men in Ludwigshafen
A very special cooking course for grieving men is taking place in Ludwigshafen, which brings the men together not only culinary but also emotionally. The Hospice and Palliative Support Association launched this course with the title “Taste life again: Cooking course for grieving men”. The next date is just around the corner: On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the teaching kitchen of the Center for Outpatient Rehabilitation (ZAR) at St. Marien Hospital will open its doors to participants again between 5 and 7 p.m. MRN News reports that the courses usually take place on the second Tuesday of the month and the number of participants is limited to six people to create a personal atmosphere.
Why is this course so important? The men who take part often have had a difficult time. They have lost their wives and are now faced with the challenge of managing everyday life alone. The cooking course not only offers the opportunity to learn practical cooking skills, but above all a space for exchange and mourning. My ka highlights that the course not only teaches kitchen techniques, but also brings back memories as participants talk about their deceased partners. A 74-year-old participant, wearing his wedding ring on his little finger, gives us an insight into the emotional depth of these meetings: He has never cooked before, but now he conjures up dishes with others and shares his memories.
Cooking and grieving together
The atmosphere in the teaching kitchen is one of warmth and understanding. Tears often flow when men talk about their wives. The course leader Dietmar Breininger not only teaches the participants how to cook, but also explains that it is not about perfect dishes, but about creating something with what is available. For example, the men learn how to prepare a béchamel sauce and cook lasagna together. The Daily Mirror describes how everyone cleans up together at the end of an evening - a symbolic act that represents continuing life and dealing with grief.
The cooking class has been running since March 2024 and in that time has become an outpouring of support and community for grieving men. If necessary, the number of participants can be increased to seven or eight so that everyone who has the courage can find a place. The offer is free, but donations are welcome to support the valuable work of the support association.
