SWR Safety Day: Learn to save lives in Ludwigshafen!

An exciting day is ahead in Ludwigshafen: The SWR Safety Day will take place in the Rhein-Galerie on November 8, 2025. This is all about first aid. The aim of the event is for interested visitors to acquire the basic knowledge to act correctly in emergencies. Experts estimate that tens of thousands of lives could be saved every year in Germany through first aid. So it's up to each and every one of us to help.

The event features interactive workshops in which participants learn what to do in an emergency. Topics such as cardiac massage, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and the application of pressure bandages are on the program. Accident doctors from the BG accident clinic and nursing specialists also provide valuable tips on treating burns and cuts. Visitors also gain insight into everyday work at the BG accident clinic through exciting lectures.

Practical guide to saving lives

Especially because around 55,000 patients in Germany will have been resuscitated after a cardiac arrest in 2023, it is important that more people know how they can help quickly and effectively in an emergency. In approximately 51 percent of these cases, first responders began resuscitation, reinforcing the need for first aid courses. The SWR Safety Day could be the key to increasing the number of life savers and helping to ensure that more people have a real chance of being saved. Medical Journal reported that the resuscitation rate by first aiders remained stable at 51 percent.

The right technology plays a crucial role. Rhythm is important for effective chest compressions, and this is where music comes into play. The song “Stayin' Alive” by the Bee Gees, with around 100 beats per minute, is not only a catchy tune, but also serves as an excellent rhythm aid for chest compressions. Seven other well-known songs with a similarly fast tempo are also available and could encourage potential lifesavers to keep the right rhythm:

  • „Crazy in Love“ – Beyoncé
  • „Hips Don’t Lie“ – Shakira
  • „Uptown Funk“ – Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars
  • „Shape of You“ – Ed Sheeran
  • „Dancing Queen“ – ABBA

. They help ensure that chest compressions occur at the right rate and can effectively support the pressure on the heart.

Children learn while having fun

A special highlight of Safety Day is the Teddy Clinic for children. Here, little visitors can get to know the work of doctors and nurses in a playful way. Not only is knowledge passed on, but it also promotes a sense of responsibility for one's own health and that of others.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and therefore offers enough time for anyone interested to fully immerse themselves in the various aspects of first aid. SWR also provides information about the use of defibrillators, which are increasingly available in the Palatinate. However, only 14 defibrillator locations have been documented in Ludwigshafen so far, which shows that there is still room for improvement.

The SWR Safety Day is not only an opportunity to learn first aid skills, but also a call to actively promote your own safety and that of others. It will be exciting to see what impressions and experiences visitors will take away from these workshops. After all, in an emergency, it could be the crucial knowledge that saves a life.
