Hambacher conversation: AI in internal security - opportunities and risks!

On Thursday, June 26th, the legendary Hambach Castle will once again be the scene of lively discussions. The next Hambach talk will take place at 7 p.m. under the title “Opportunities and Dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Internal Security”. This event deals with a topic that is constantly becoming more relevant in our digitalized world and is increasingly influencing our daily lives.

The discussants include Tobias Wirth, head of the Smart Data and Knowledge Services research area at the German Research Center for AI in Kaiserslautern, as well as the lawyer and philosopher David Roth-Isigkeit. With free entry, participants can expect an exciting conversation about the influence of AI on crime and how to combat it. Registration is via email hambachergespraech@hambacher-schloss.de possible.

About the opportunities and challenges of the digital world

But what exactly is on the agenda? [Rheinpfalz] reports that the influence of artificial intelligence on our security mechanisms requires careful consideration. AI can be misused as a means of crime as well as helping to prevent and combat crime. At this point it is important to distinguish between the different roles of AI: as perpetrator, victim and instrument of law enforcement.

Technologies like deepfakes illustrate how AI is already being used criminally today. Cyberattacks, such as those caused by ransomware, are becoming more precise and targeted with AI. It also shows that phishing attacks are becoming more personalized thanks to AI, which increases the success rate for criminals. [Kripoz] examines these facets and provides a deep insight into the problem that autonomous means of transport can also become tools of crime.

Legal framework urgently needed

But it's not just the perpetrators who are affected. Intelligent systems that process data can also be addressed by the victim themselves. So how we use these technologies raises questions about criminal liability and potential dangers, such as discrimination through predictive policing. A balance must be found between using AI to avert threats and protecting individual freedoms. The discussion about clear legal framework conditions is therefore becoming increasingly louder so that the opportunities of the digital world are not lost in the dangers of misuse.

A central concern of the Hambach conversation will be to discuss precisely these questions. This is important not just for politicians and scientists, but for each and every one of us who live in a rapidly changing digital world. How much digitalization does internal security need? And what are the limits?

Be part of the discussion that affects not only the future of security, but also that of society as a whole! Visit Hambach Castle on June 26th and bring your questions with you!
