Reading summer 2025: Children read a record 215,000 books!

In Rhineland-Palatinate the signs point to a joy of reading! Around 300 libraries took part in this year's Reading Summer and Reading Summer 2025, and the result is impressive: over 34,000 children and young people put together their personal reading cocktail and enjoyed an exciting reading adventure. In keeping with the motto that reading is fun, the final event took place on October 1, 2025 in the Neustadt a.d. State Library Center. Weinstrasse took place, where the most successful libraries were honored. The Speyer Courier reports that there were a remarkable 215,000 books read - an increase of over 15,000 compared to the previous year.

On average, each child read an impressive 8.5 books, which shows how popular the reading summer is among young bookworms. Participation in the reading summer was also remarkable, with over 8,800 children having around 59,000 books read to them. These initiatives are not only fun, but also strengthen language and reading skills. In addition, children can collect certificates if they have read at least three books, which is often even recognized by schools as a special note on the certificate, like this Reading summer team informed.

Awards and funding

The committed libraries were rewarded for their efforts: the prizes for the reading summer went to Bitburg, Contwig, Waldsee, KÖB Schönberg-Kübelberg, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and Pirmasens. Gückingen, Hachenburg, Bleialf (KÖB), Thaleischweiler-Fröschen and Dienheim received awards for the reading summer. Book vouchers were also distributed to numerous other libraries, including Adenau, Altenkirchen and Koblenz, to further promote reading.

A total of 297 libraries were involved in at least one of the two reading campaigns, with 174 even taking part in both. This broad commitment is also supported by funding from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which contributed 200,000 euros to the reading summer. The reading summer received support of 3,000 euros from the Lotto Foundation Rhineland-Palatinate. This makes it clear that reading is very important in the region.

The role of libraries

Libraries are not only places for reading, but also important companions in education. The State Library Center therefore specifically promotes language and reading promotions. These are a central part of the educational landscape and reach children, young people and adults. The modules for promoting reading and media education are part of a comprehensive program that supports libraries in reaching all segments of the population.

One thing is already certain for the future: The Reading Summer and Reading Summer 2026 will take place from June 15th to August 15th. With a new design, the programs should inspire even more readers. Interest in books and stories continues to grow, and libraries are becoming increasingly important as places to meet and learn.
