Mysterious damage: Police are looking for witnesses in Leubsdorf and Rheinbreitbach!

In recent weeks, knocked down guide posts and damaged traffic signs have caused a stir in the region. The Linz Police Department is currently investigating two cases that occurred between July 1st and 4th, 2025 and June 3rd to 10th, 2025. The incidents involved the destruction of a guide post on Kreisstraße 8 (K 8) in Leubsdorf and a traffic sign on Rolandsecker Weg (K 23) in Rheinbreitbach.

The police have not yet received any information about the vehicles responsible or any accidents. “We appeal to the public to report possible observations during the specified periods,” said a police spokesman. Anyone with information can contact us directly at the telephone number 02644-9430 report to the Linz police station.

The importance of guideposts

But why is the loss of such transport facilities so serious? Delineator posts that stand on the sides of the road are important orientation aids. They mark the course of the streets and are particularly important at night, snow or rain. Typically they are placed about 50 meters apart to ensure clear visibility, especially on curves where density is increased. For example, a white bar signals that the post is to the right of the road, while two white dots indicate a left-hand post. In addition to marking the road, the posts also help to estimate the distance to the next vehicle and to avoid accidents with wild animals, as special blue reflectors are intended to deter wild animals.

The deliberate removal or damage of such posts can not only lead to dangerous situations in traffic, but is also legally questionable. Anyone who fails to report a delineator that has been knocked over is committing a hit-and-run and can be fined or imprisoned. “This has to be taken seriously, because don’t forget: the guide posts are also part of our security,” warns the police.

In this context it becomes clear how important it is to be vigilant and to inform the police if something is observed. Damaging traffic facilities is not only a crime, but also has a negative impact on the safety of all road users. Anyone who sees anything – whether vehicles or people who caused the damage – should definitely get in touch!

Overall, it is a call for shared responsibility on our roads. Let us ensure that our traffic facilities are not vandalized and help increase road safety.
