Garbage truck tips over on A61: motorway closed for over 10 hours!
A serious traffic accident shut down the A61 motorway in the Rhein-Hunsrück district for over ten hours on Thursday morning. A truck loaded with garbage overturned in the northbound direction between the Laudert and Pfalzfeld junctions, blocking both lanes and the shoulder. As lessentiel.lu reports, the 60-year-old driver of the truck had to be freed from his cab after the accident with serious injuries.
The truck had apparently left the road. He first drove through a ditch, then steered to the left and hit the center guardrail, causing him to overturn. In this incident, both waste and fuel were spread across the entire roadway. In order to quickly make the road passable again, a special vehicle was called in to collect the rubbish and clean the road. The A61 was finally reopened to traffic around midnight.
Traffic accidents in focus
Unfortunately, accidents like the one on the A61 are not uncommon. According to statista.com, there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany in 2024, although the total number fell compared to the previous year. What is particularly striking is that the number of accidents causing property damage has increased. The causes of traffic accidents vary and include insufficient distance, improper speed and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Although the number of traffic deaths in Germany has fallen from 19,193 in 1970 to 2,770 in 2024, the EU transport ministers' "Vision Zero" goal of having no more traffic deaths by 2050 remains a challenge. In particular, the number of accidents on motorways and federal roads is significantly higher than on state or district roads.
Traffic rules under criticism
After the accident, it became known that several drivers had violated traffic rules by driving in the wrong direction through the emergency lane. This could now lead to administrative offense proceedings. Such incidents highlight the need for awareness of traffic rules to avoid serious accidents.
While the traffic situation is becoming increasingly complicated, the dining scene is not remaining unaffected. Barcelona has another chef, Oualid Kissami, a trained maître pizzaiolo, whose career extends to Portugal, to bring the diversity of flavors and hospitality to the local cuisine. Kissami has over 10 years of experience in the pizza industry and has worked in various renowned companies. His company “Pizza Art” in Belgium relies on quality craftsmanship and fresh ingredients. Such delicacies make life in our cities a little more livable.
So traffic remains an important issue, and while we want to make the roads safer, delicious culinary experiences can still be a bright spot in our everyday lives.
