Maxdorf is planning to demolish the Albert Funk House for a new sports hall!

The excavators will soon be rolling in Maxdorf: the Albert Funk House, which is known as the community center in the center of the town, is about to be demolished. The Maxdorf local council gave the green light on Monday to make space for a new sports hall. This could be an important step towards strengthening club and school sports in the region; the forest sports hall, which is currently in dire need of renovation, will also be taken into account in the plans. The demolition of the Albert Funk House is scheduled for 2026/27, and the costs for the measure are estimated at around 400,000 euros. The property will then be handed over to the Maxdorf municipality in a ready-to-build condition so that construction can begin.

Why this step? The local community wants to ensure that sporting activities can continue without major interruptions. The old site will be returned to the community after the new forest sports hall is completed. Discussions about the future use of the site will take place in the relevant committees in the coming months. There are already some ideas here: While the CDU favors a new community center, the SPD is thinking of additional “citizen rooms” in the new hall and wants to design the old area as a modern leisure area.

The importance of sports facilities

This step is part of a larger trend, as a current survey as part of the “KfW Municipal Panel 2025” shows. According to [Difu], there is a serious need for investment in sports facilities in Germany. 94% of municipalities have sports halls, but many are struggling with investment backlogs. The report confirms that 59% of cities report a “serious” or “notable” backlog in sports facilities. These developments underline the need to actively promote projects such as the new building in Maxdorf.

Investments in new sports facilities are crucial in order to provide citizens with a wide range of leisure activities. Five or more than half of the municipalities have not built any new sports facilities in the last ten years. By demolishing the Albert Funk House and building a new sports hall, Maxdorf would like to proactively combat this trend and ensure a sporting offering at the highest level.

The new building not only promotes sport, but also strengthens social interaction in Maxdorf. The future of the Albert Funk House seems to be a done deal, but planning for the new sports facilities and their design are already in full swing. As a result, it remains to be seen how the ideas put forward by the various political groups will become reality. Maxdorf is at the beginning of an exciting chapter - this should not only revitalize sport, but the entire community.

Meanwhile, the Johanneskirche, which was built in the 1950s and is located in the Maxdorf BASF settlement, is another local cultural heritage that underlines the community's closeness to tradition.
